Lauren LaRose, MD is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and Adult Psychiatrist in private practice. Marianna Boyd is the Executive Director of Social and Digital Media at Tulane University. Lauren and Marianna are also both moms of young children and are committed to using their combined knowledge to try to limit or eliminate social media and smartphone addiction primarily in children and adolescents, while also helping adults to recognize their part in modeling healthy social media and smartphone habits. Marianna will explain how social media platforms are designed to attract adult consumers but end up attracting child and adolescent consumers. She will also explain how social media algorithms work to keep users engaged and constantly connected. Lauren will provide insight into the potential consequences of social media, smartphone use, and excessive screen time on mental health and brain development in children and adolescents. Both Lauren and Marianna will use real-life examples from their respective work-places to demonstrate the gravity of this situation. We believe that the only way to alter this trajectory is for parents to come together to set common rules, limits and goals regarding social media and smartphone use in their children.
